Jahn, the inn keeper, took a glance at the Merten son, trying to understand what he was doing here alone, which was odd for him. A few merchants were talking in the back of the room, others by the door, and music was played by a flute player.Īround 9 o’clock, Arnold, one of the Merten sons, entered the tavern, walked to a table and asked for a fine keg of ale. ![]() On that famous night of December 1417, everything was peaceful, which was really unusual for that place. A place of jolly fellows, The St-Bastian was known for its local customers and for its much sought-after gambling table, along with the abundant fights between the two merchant’s families: the Mertens and the Schmolls. ![]()
